A member in the SFERS Police or Fire plan is an active employee who works as a sworn Police Officer or Firefighter for the City and County of San Francisco. Employees hired before November 2, 1976, are members of the Police or Fire Old Plan. Employees hired on or after November 2, 1976, are members of one of the Police or Fire New Plans.
While training to become a Police Officer or a Firefighter, an employee is a member in the Miscellaneous Plan. When the employee qualifies for retirement, he/she may be eligible to receive an additional monthly benefit for the miscellaneous service, or a refund of the miscellaneous contributions if the member is not eligible for a miscellaneous benefit.
