safety communicationsSFERS, CalPERS and certain other California public retirement systems provide “reciprocal” retirement benefits.  Members can use service credit earned under each reciprocal retirement system to meet eligibility requirements in each plan (if qualified).  When a member retires simultaneously from all plans, his/her highest compensation earned with any of the reciprocal systems will be used to calculate benefits in each system. Generally, to qualify for reciprocity under SFERS a member must meet the following criteria:

  • Became a member of SFERS on or after June 29, 1988 and terminated employment with CalPERS or a reciprocal retirement system within six (6) months of employment with CCSF, or terminated employment with CCSF and became a member of a reciprocal system within six months after your termination date with CCSF.  Contact CalPERS at 1 (888) 225-7377 for a current list of reciprocal retirement systems.
  • At retirement, a member must apply to retire from each system separately using the same retirement date.
